What large or bulky items can be collected?

Working in partnership with Emmaus Coventry and Warwickshire for a small charge, we can collect bulky household waste. Alternatively you can get rid of these items yourself by taking them to the Household Recycling and Reuse Centre (the tip) or by hiring a skip.

Bulky household items we will collect:

  • White goods and small electrical appliances – e.g. washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridges, freezers, cookers, microwaves, computers, small electrical items
  • Furnishings – e.g. sofas, settees, tables, chairs, bed base and mattress, wardrobe
  • Domestic waste – excess black bag waste, where three black sacks are equal to one individual item
  • Other household items such as bikes, exercise  equipment (excluding running machines), garden furniture

Bulky household items we will not collect:

  • Asbestos
  • Builders rubble (including bricks, concrete, paving slabs and tiles)
  • Gas cylinders
  • Garden waste
  • Pianos
  • Liquids or hazardous waste
  • Tyres
  • Fixtures and fittings – such as doors, window units, bathroom suites, kitchen units, flooring including carpet and laminate
  • Bundles of wood

Many of these items may be taken to the Household Recycling and Reuse Centre (the tip). For details on the disposal of specific items please see A-Z of rubbish and recycling or contact Customer Services.

This service is for households within the boundaries of Coventry City Council only. This service is not available to business and private landlords.

Items suitable for reuse

As a Council we are committed to recycling as much as we possibly can and we have now partnered with the charity Emmaus Coventry and Warwickshire who will collect, reuse and recycle as many of your bulky waste items as possible.

When requesting a bulky waste collection, please support us in identifying whether you consider that your items can be reused. Items such as sofas, wardrobes and dining tables collected as part of the bulky waste collection service which are reusable will sold in Emmaus’s shop on Red Lane raising vital funds for the charity.  Emmaus provides formerly homeless people, known as Companions, with a home, food and basic essentials and full time work. In return companions sign off benefits and commit to working 40 hours each week in one of their social enterprises.  Items which cannot be sold will be recycled elsewhere or go to landfill.

For the following items, we can only reuse them if there is a fire label attached:

  • Sofas
  • Beds/Mattresses
  • Dining chairs which are wholly or part fabric

For electrical items, we are able to test and resell them, but we'd like your help in identifying whether items are in good working condition or can be restored to good working condition. In order for use to reuse electrical items they must be mould and rust free.
