Taxi tests (for Hackney Carriages or private hire vehicles) should be booked through Taxi Licensing. This service is for members of the public to book their private MOTs with workshops.
You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT.
Coventry City Council is an authorised MOT test station for Class 4, Class 4a and Class 7 MOTs.
However, we do have a height restriction, width restriction, and a weight restriction. This is to ensure your vehicle can fit through the workshop doors and be lifted on the workshop ramp for underside inspection. The height, width and weight of your vehicle will be in your vehicle owner's manual for reference.
The types of vehicle Class 4, Class 4a and Class 7 MOTs applies to:
Class 4
- Cars (up to 8 passenger seats)
- Motor caravans
- Quads (maximum unladen weight 400kg - for goods vehicles 550kg and maximum net power of 15kw)
- Dual purpose vehicles
- Private hire and public service vehicles (up to 8 seats)
- Ambulances and taxis
- Private passenger vehicles and ambulances (9 to 12 passenger seats)
- Goods vehicles (up to 3,500kg design gross weight)
Sorry, we can't test Class 4 3-wheeled vehicles (over 450kg unladen weight).
Class 4a
- Class 4 vehicles (9 to 12 passengers) with a seat belt installation check
Class 7
- Goods vehicles (over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg design gross weight)
MOT cost
We charge £50.00 for a Class 4, Class 4a or Class 7 MOT.
You can have a free MOT retest if you return your vehicle to us within ten days (not including Saturday and Sunday or any Bank Holiday).

The depot is accessible to the public from the London Road entrance.
You will need to stop at the security barrier where you will be directed to the MOT parking bays.
You will then need to visit the workshop reception.

About the MOT test
The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards.
You must get a MOT for your vehicle by either;
- the third anniversary of its registration
- the anniversary of its last MOT, if it's over 3 years old

MOT test length
The MOT takes approximately one hour to complete.
Leaving and collecting your vehicle
You can leave your vehicle with us and drop your keys off at reception. You will need to collect your vehicle the same day, before 6pm (Monday to Thursday) or 4pm (Friday).
Fixing your vehicle
We do not provide a vehicle repair service.
Passing the MOT
If your vehicle passes the MOT;
- you'll get a MOT certificate [https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mot-test-pass-certificate-samples] from us
- it will be recorded in the MOT database
You might also get a list of 'minor' or 'advisory' problems to monitor or fix in future.
Failing the MOT
Your vehicle will fail if the test result lists 'dangerous' or 'major' problems with your vehicle. You might not be allowed to drive until you fix the problems.

If your vehicle fails the MOT;
- you'll get a refusal of a MOT test certificate [https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mot-test-failure-notice-samples] from us
- it will be recorded in the MOT database
You can appeal the result [https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/problems-with-your-test-result] if you think it's wrong.
Taking your vehicle away for repair if it has failed the MOT
You can take your vehicle away if;
- your current MOT certificate is still valid
- no 'dangerous' problems were listed in the MOT
Otherwise, you will need to get it repaired before you can drive.
You will need to recover your vehicle from our depot if it has failed the MOT.
If you can take your vehicle away, it must still meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness [https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-safe] at all times.

The MOT retest will check that the item(s) your vehicle failed on have been rectified to the required standard.
MOT retest length
The MOT retest will check the specific 'dangerous' or 'major' problem has been rectified to the required standard. The retest therefore takes less time than a test (one hour).

You can leave your vehicle with us and drop your keys off at reception. You will need to collect your vehicle before 6pm (Monday to Thursday) or 4pm (Friday).
