Requesting a reconsideration or challenging your Council Tax charge

Reconsiderations

If you think your Council Tax bill is wrong then please let us know as soon as possible. Please tell us why you think your bill is wrong but please continue to make your payments.

We will review your bill and issue a corrected bill if appropriate.

Appeal against your council tax liability

You can appeal against our decision if:

  • You think you should not be liable
  • You think the amount of the bill is incorrect
  • You think we should have awarded a discount, reduction or exemption
  • You think we have issued a completion notice incorrectly for a new or altered building.

Your appeal should explain what you wish to appeal, why you wish to appeal and any appropriate supporting evidence. Your appeal can be sent in the post to: Revenues and Benefits, Coventry City Council, PO Box 7097, Coventry, CV6 9SL or complete the Council Tax enquiries [https://myaccount.coventry.gov.uk/service/Council_Tax___General_query] online form.

When we receive your appeal we will review your account and respond to you in writing. If we agree that your liability is incorrect we will issue a new bill. If we think our original decision is correct then we will write to you to explain why.

We are required to respond to appeals within 2 months but will normally respond to you sooner. If we do not respond to you within 2 months you can appeal directly to the Valuation Tribunal [https://www.valuationtribunal.gov.uk/].

If you are not satisfied with our decision on your appeal you can appeal to the Valuation Tribunal [https://www.valuationtribunal.gov.uk/] within 2 months of our decision.

Challenging your Council Tax band

The Council does not set your Council Tax band. If you think your property is in the wrong Council Tax band you should contact the Valuation Office Agency [https://www.gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band] (VOA).

You can ask The VOA to review your Council Tax band if you think it is wrong and you have been the taxpayer for less than six months, or your band has changed in the last six months.

If this does not appIy you can still ask VOA to review your Council Tax band, but you'll need to provide strong supporting evidence showing why you believe your property is in the wrong band.

You can find more information about challenging your Council Tax band on VOA's website [https://www.gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band]. The online service allows you to check your band and submit a challenge if you think your band may be wrong.

If you do challenge your Council Tax band you must continue paying your original Council Tax bill. If your challenge is successful we will refund any money that you have overpaid.
