Coventry City Council was successful in securing funds as part of the Commonwealth Active Communities funding that is part of Sport England’s wider investment into the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The aim of the funding is to tackle inactivity in local communities and engage underrepresented groups by delivering programmes such as:
- Go Parks – delivering sport and physical activity in parks and green spaces for young people
- Coventry Moves – delivering social and inclusive activity for over 50s and those in care homes.
The Commonwealth Active Communities Fund through Sport England is managed by Coventry City Council in partnership with the Physical Activity Network. Following the pandemic, the effects of isolation across the city have created inequalities, exacerbating pre-existing barriers to physical activity as well as creating new challenges.

Go Parks is a project delivered in partnership with Positive Youth Foundation which gives young people of Coventry new and exciting ways to use parks and green spaces in the city.
The project has brought together communities of all ages and cultures from across the city to ultimately get moving in our parks and green spaces.
Renovating tennis courts in parks and targeted activities across a number of parks and safe spaces are all a part of the project.

Care homes and assisted living settings
Coventry Moves is delivered in partnership with CV Life across nine settings around Coventry and is making an immensely positive impact on the older generation through social and physical activities.
Case studies demonstrate that residents have become more active and regained social confidence and independence as a result of the programme.
Community
Coventry Moves also connects with over 50s in the community to reduce their social isolation and improve their health and well-being.
Activities include monthly Sporting Memories sessions, coffee mornings and weekly sessions for Slow Zumba, Walking Netball, Walking Rugby and No Strings Badminton.
