Councillor Patricia Hetherton: Hello, I’m here this afternoon on Sowe Common in Walsgrave and I’m with Tim Wetherhill who is our tree expert in our organisation and we’re talking about planting trees. We have a strategy where we want to plant 360,000 trees over the next ten years and this is really important in terms of climate change and what we’re hearing from COP26 and will continue to do so. It’s about trees. It makes a difference to the environment and to the planet.
Tim: We’re kicking off this year with about 10 tree planting days where volunteers can come along and plant trees across a range of sites. Sowe Common is one of them. We’re got about 4,300 trees hopefully on here. We’ve also got Longford Park, we’ve got Allesley Park, we’ve got about 6,000 trees going on there. Floyds Field as well. So there’s some good new woodland creation going on.
The tree planting days, anyone can turn up on one of those days and come along and plant a tree. And the more people we get, the less time and the easier it’ll be to get those trees in the ground. Anybody can turn up on the day. Get a spade. Get a tree. Get some good footwear, that’ll be key, and hope it doesn’t rain, and hopefully we’ll get it all done quickly!
