Overview

Social care in England is inclusive of social work, personal care, social support, and protection for those (children, families and adults) who are finding themselves under vulnerable circumstances or are at risk of harm for varied reasons. It focuses on the wider part of the population, with services targeting specific groups, and social phenomena. Those at the receiving end of services (as well as those at the delivering end) present with complex and intersected identities that directly shape lived experiences, as well as copying strategies and personality traits, which in turn inform how individuals and groups interact with professionals and/or services/agencies. One personal and protected identity is that of religion or belief, and this seminar will focus on that.

Aims

The purpose of this seminar is to enable practitioners in adult social care to improve their knowledge and understanding of religion and belief by engaging with key issues about the place of religion and belief in social care, and how this is/or can be integrated into practice.

Content

This seminar will cover the following areas:

• Concepts and challenges about religion, belief, spirituality, non-religious identities.
• Legal and practical frameworks of discussing religious diversity and plurality in social care.
• Practical models of assessing and integrating religion, belief and spiritual identities in professional practice.
• Religious Literacy Model.

Religious/spiritual abuse and safeguarding demands.

Course Outcomes

Those completing this session will:

• Have improved their knowledge and understanding of religion, faith, belief, spirituality and non-religion as concepts and identities which shape lived experiences.
• Have developed an understanding of some of the key challenges associated with religion, belief and spiritual identities in social care.
• Have acquired further knowledge of the legal requirements and practical considerations in relation to religion, belief and spiritual identities.
• Have acquired knowledge of different models of practice when assessing religion, belief and spiritual identities, inclusive of the religious literacy model.
