This course is delivered in the home to students who are unable to attend on site provision.
Week 1: Understanding the Transition to Secondary School
• Topics Covered: o What to expect in secondary school: new routines, subjects, and expectations. o Building confidence and managing feelings of anxiety or excitement about the transition.
• Activities: o Group discussion on worries or hopes for secondary school. o Interactive activity on managing change positively.
Week 2: Identifying and Filling Knowledge Gaps (Maths Focus)
• Topics Covered: o Reviewing key areas of the UK primary school maths curriculum (fractions, multiplication, division, etc.). o Identifying individual gaps in knowledge and practicing problem-solving skills.
• Activities: o Maths assessment to highlight strengths and areas for improvement. o Group exercises on commonly challenging topics, with practical examples.
Week 3: Identifying and Filling Knowledge Gaps (English Focus)
• Topics Covered: o Reviewing core areas of primary English, including grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehension. o Identifying individual strengths and areas needing reinforcement in literacy skills.
• Activities: o Writing and comprehension activities designed to fill gaps in key areas. o Peer feedback on written exercises to improve language skills.
Week 4: Study Skills and Time Management
• Topics Covered: o Introduction to effective study habits and time management strategies for secondary school. o Techniques for organisation, prioritising tasks, and setting academic goals.
• Activities: o Workshop on creating personalised study timetables and organising schoolwork. o Role-playing scenarios to practice managing multiple tasks.
Week 5: Building Social and Communication Skills
• Topics Covered: o Developing good communication skills and confidence in social situations. o Understanding how to form friendships, deal with peer pressure, and resolve conflicts.
• Activities: o Role-playing exercises on starting conversations, making friends, and handling conflicts at school.
Week 6: Preparing for Secondary School Life
• Topics Covered: o Understanding the layout of secondary school, managing different subjects and teachers, and getting involved in extracurricular activities. o Reviewing and celebrating individual progress throughout the course.
• Activities: o Group discussion on goals for the first term of secondary school. o Final activity: creating a personal "Secondary School Success Plan" that outlines academic and social goals.
Assessment and Evaluation
• Participation: Engaging in group activities and discussions.
• Quizzes: Weekly assessments to reinforce understanding of curriculum content.
• Final Project: Developing a personalised action plan for success in secondary school, including academic goals and social strategies.
By the end of this course, participants will have strengthened their core academic skills, filled knowledge gaps from primary school, and gained the confidence and practical tools needed to succeed in their transition to secondary school - Qualification (If Applicable)
