Registering to vote - information for the General Election

Voting

Key dates for elections on 4 July 2024

  • The deadline for those interested in standing as a candidate is 4pm on 7 June 2024
  • Deadline for new applications to register in time to vote at the above election: Tuesday 18 June 2024
  • Deadline for submitting applications to vote by post at the above election: Wednesday 19 June, 5pm
  • Deadline for submitting applications to vote by proxy at the above election: Wednesday 26 June 5pm
  • Deadline for submitting applications for a voter authority certificate at the above election: Wednesday 26 June 5pm

The easiest way to register to vote is online [http://www.gov.uk/registertovote]

You need to register to vote if you've never registered before, or if your name, address or nationality have changed.

How can I check that I'm registered to vote for the general election?

Poll cards will be sent out for all registered electors from 5 June, if you receive a poll card for this election, you are registered to vote and you don't need to register.

If you don't receive a poll card, you may not be registered. You can call us during office hours on 024 7683 3034 to check if you're registered.

Alternatively, you could email us at electoral.services@coventry.gov.uk - we'll need your full name and current address to check this for you.

What if I'm moving house?

If you move house before 18 June, you should re-register at www.gov.uk/registertovote [http://www.gov.uk/registertovote].

If you move house after 18 June, it is too late to change your address before the election on 4 July. You may still be registered at your previous address.

Result

Results will be published as they are declared on 5 July 2024.

Complaints

If you have a comment or complaint about the City Council's running of the elections, you should refer them to the Council's online complaints form. [http://www.coventry.gov.uk/info/5/contact_the_council/545/comments_compliments_and_complaints]

Information for overseas electors - General Election

British citizens living abroad can vote in UK Parliamentary elections even if live outside the UK.

They will need to have previously lived or been registered to vote in the UK at some point in their life.

You can register as an overseas elector [http://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote], and your overseas declaration is now valid for three years, lasting the 1 November in the third year after it takes effect.

When applying, you need to provide the last UK address you lived at or were registered to vote at. You also need to provide your National Insurance number and date of birth. These are used to verify your identity.

More details can be found on the Electoral Commission website [https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/news-and-views/elections-act/changes-overseas-voting]

Options for voting as an overseas elector

As on overseas elector you will need to make arrangements for absent voting.

The options available are:

  • appoint a proxy in the UK who could either visit your polling station or apply for a postal vote themselves in order to ensure that your vote is counted
  • apply to vote by post – the ballot paper would be sent to the address you request on your application.

It is recommended that you consider appointing a proxy as due to the fact that ballot packs cannot be distributed until after the close of nominations (which is the time candidates can stand) the earliest they are likely to be despatch is -12 days before any election, that is assuming your arrangement is in place before the election is called. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is -11 days before the election so if you made an application by that point your pack is unlikely to be despatched until -6 days before. In view of these timings it is unlikely a pack would manage to make it to an overseas address and be returned by 10pm on polling day.

You can find more information on proxy and postal voting on the Electoral Commission website [https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/ways-vote].

You will be also provided with a briefing at this time of the key issues for the election and campaign.

Postal vote information

All electors who have requested that ballot papers be sent overseas have been contacted and advised of the risks associated with being able to receive and return their ballot papers in time for them to be counted and provided with the option of changing their absent voting arrangements before 5pm on 19 June to a proxy vote.

Further information

Once nominations have closed all agents will be contacted with information regarding the appointment of polling and counting agents, together with other useful information regarding the count.

Postal votes will be opened from Monday 1 July to Wednesday 3 July starting at 9am each day until completed.  .
