It is likely that the children you care for as foster carers are going to have experienced trauma, abuse, and neglect, in addition to loss when they are separated from their birth families. These experiences can impact on their physical and emotional development and as such children might require a different approach to parenting. Therapeutic parenting is a term given to ways of parenting that offer children the opportunity to heal, alongside all the other things they need from a parent or carer. As a Service, we support all our foster care arrangements to be therapeutic as children need to feel safe and secure in your care before they can meet their normative developmental potential.
In Coventry, we promote the following approaches:
- Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP [https://ddpnetwork.org/about-ddp/]) is a therapeutic approach which relies on carers being ‘PACEful’ (Playful, Accepting, Curious and Empathetic) in their being, considering a child’s trauma with a strong emphasis on building a connection with a child. This is a model “to support children to recover from trauma an disrupted attachments through the parenting, education and care they receive as well as through therapy”.
- Trauma-Informed Practice “is a strengths-based approach, which seeks to understand and respond to the impact of trauma on people’s lives.
