Introduction
Coventry is a city built on openness, diversity, and compassion. As part of Coventry City Council, we are proud to play a leading role in supporting migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees, ensuring that everyone can thrive and contribute to our city’s vibrant community. Guided by our long-standing values as a City of Sanctuary and City of Peace and Reconciliation, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment that values every individual’s journey.
Historical contributions
Coventry has been a welcoming home for migrants throughout its history. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, skilled Jewish migrants fleeing persecution in Europe brought expertise that propelled the city’s industries, including watchmaking and automotive manufacturing. Figures like Philip Cohen and Siegfried Bettmann embody the entrepreneurial spirit that has defined Coventry’s growth.

Following World War II, migrants from Poland, Ukraine, and Commonwealth nations like the Caribbean arrived to help rebuild Coventry, fuelling economic recovery and driving innovation in manufacturing, healthcare, and public services. These communities laid the foundation for the diverse and resilient city we see today.
Contemporary impact
Today, Coventry thrives as a hub of innovation and opportunity, enriched by its migrant communities. Skilled professionals and international students contribute to key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, digital technology, and healthcare. Our universities—Coventry and Warwick—act as global academic centres, drawing talent from around the world and fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration.
Personal stories – May Parsons
Migrants are at the heart of Coventry’s story. On December 8, 2020, Filipino-British nurse May Parsons made history in Coventry by administering the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine outside clinical trials. Her dedication underscores the vital role of migrant healthcare workers in safeguarding the wellbeing of our communities.
“I’m hoping that people value the sacrifices we make and the risks we take to keep their families looked after.”
The role of the Migration Team
The Migration Team, established in 2014, works collaboratively with local organisations to support asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants from their first day in Coventry. By offering tailored support services and fostering community connections, we help newcomers rebuild their lives and become active participants in our city.
A timeline of resilience
Our team’s work reflects Coventry’s response to global challenges, from welcoming Syrian families displaced by conflict to offering sanctuary to Afghan and Ukrainian refugees. These efforts highlight the city’s unwavering commitment to compassion and solidarity.
