Lesley Robertson - September winner
On 17 September 2000, shortly after 1pm, Mrs Robertson was in Farren Road near to the junction with Hipswell Highway when she became aware of a woman who was clearly in a state of distress.
She then saw a man who was staggering about in the road and obviously in need of help. She quickly discovered that the man had suffered a severance of his carotid artery.
She applied pressure to the artery, and continued to do so until an ambulance arrived. The man was taken to hospital, where, fortunately, a surgeon was able to perform an operation to stem the bleeding.
There is no doubt that the skill of the surgeon would have been in vain, and the man would have died, had it not been for Mrs Robertson's calm and public-spirited action.
