Local initiatives actively address HIV stigma and disparities
Various community activities are actively raising awareness about the importance of accessing HIV services.
Last December, on World AIDS Day, Coventry Pride organised an enlightening and poignant gathering, which was also shared online, to increase awareness about HIV prevention and testing. A representative from the NHS sexual health service was also present on the day to provide valuable advice to locals. On the same day, the Wellbeing Monitor a community organisation, engaged with Coventry University students through an informational stand, featuring an interactive "Test your HIV knowledge quiz" that addressed six questions regarding HIV myths versus truths. Over 90% of respondents believed that taking birth control pills prevents HIV transmission which provided an opportunity to educate on key health messages, the importance of testing, and dispel misconceptions about HIV prevention and the necessity of protection.
Anyone can get HIV but people from some groups or parts of the world are more likely to be affected.
Coventry Pride have organised an upcoming exhibition for a Memorial Quilt at the Coventry St Mary's Guildhall starting from Monday 19 February. The launch ceremony will take place at 6pm on 19 February where there will also be a talk by Garry Jones, a Birmingham-based artist who crafted the memorial quilt.
