Six parks and green spaces in Coventry which are owned by the city council have all been awarded with a Green Flag Award after meeting the high standards set out by Keep Britain Tidy.
London Road cemetery has won a Green Flag Award for the first time, joining Longford Park, Caludon Castle Park, Allesley Park, Coombe Abbey Park and the War Memorial Park which have all won the award before, proving them to be some of the best urban green spaces in the world. The six Green Flag Award sites in Coventry join the 2,227 other parks and green spaces in the UK which have also received the Green Flag Award this year.
The Green Flag Awards are judged by an army of green space experts including some of the council’s own park management team. The Green Flag Award judges volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against strict criteria, including accessibility, safety, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.
In addition to this award, Coombe Abbey Park has also been awarded a Green Heritage Site Accreditation for the management of historic features. This award, which is supported by Historic England, rewards those organisations who have taken action to conserve the heritage value of their site.
Councillor Abdul Khan, Deputy Leader of Coventry City Council said:“We’re delighted that our green spaces have received these awards. It’s a real testament to the hard work of the Council staff and volunteers who work so hard to maintain them.
“As a Council we understand how important it is to great care of our green spaces, so they are places for everyone to enjoy. With the summer holidays fast approaching I encourage everyone to get out and make the most of our amazing spaces".
Cllr Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said:
“I would like to thank our wonderful colleagues and volunteer groups who work all year round to keep these spaces in a fantastic condition. These awards are proof of their hard work and dedication.
“We remain committed in Coventry to ensuring that these spaces continue to strive for excellence, so they are available for Coventry people to enjoy for years to come.”
