Team Coventry 2024 icg

After three days of sporting competition on the international stage, Team Coventry has returned home after representing Coventry at the International Children’s Games in León, Mexico last week.

The team was formed by 16 young athletes aged 12-15 who went through a selection process to make the team.

This year Team Coventry sported a girls’ football team along with a mixed track & field team. It was the first time that girls' football was represented overseas at the International Children’s Games for Coventry.

The footballers were supported by partners, Sky Blues in the Community, who provided a Coventry City Football Club kit as well as a coach for the team.

Team Coventry is supported and run by Coventry City Council’s Sport Service.

The athletes brought home an incredible 10 medals from Mexico which is the best performance from the team for several years aside from the 2022 Games hosted in Coventry.

Medals included gold in the girls' 100m, silver in the girls’ 800m and bronze in both the girls' and boys’ 4x100m relay.

Lord Mayor of the city of Coventry, Mal Mutton, headed to the Games as City Representative after supporting the event for nearly 30 years with her late husband, John, who was also a Councillor at Coventry City Council.

The Lord Mayor said: “It was an absolute pleasure to go to Mexico with Team Coventry. We’ve supported the team for so many years and it was an honour to be there as both City Representative and Lord Mayor of Coventry and cheer on all of the athletes.

“Each one of the team’s medals was more than deserved. Each of our athletes performed to the best of their ability and was the perfect young representative of our city.

“The International Children’s Games is such a great stepping stone for athletes of this age. It’s an opportunity for them to see what it’s like to compete internationally in their sport at major venues and arenas on the other side of the world. I really look forward to celebrating the team’s achievements soon.”

The International Children’s Games is an International Olympic Committee accredited event and is attended by cities across the globe.

Alongside Sky Blues in the Community, the team had 14 other fantastic sponsors; On1 Solutions, The Hill Group, Keepmoat Homes, The Alan Higgs Charity, Coventry City Football Club, Sky Blues in the Community, Deeley Group, mCreat, Bud to Bloom, London Metric, Hammons Solicitors, Unite, Restore Records Management and Stivichall Lodge.

A Civic Reception will be held in the near future to recognise and celebrate the team’s achievements.
