Historic planning register

Using the historic planning register you can look at the original documents that formed part of the Planning Register before it was moved to an electronic system in 2005.

Whilst the Planning_Historical layer (available on our interactive map) shows most of the planning history, the archive register will allow you to view the original plotting sheets and collect the application numbers from the source information and search Planning Register yourself. Using the Coventry Reference search field.

It is not intended for the information to be used as a replacement for a formal planning search which are required when drawing up sales/lease agreements. For more information on this type of search you should visit our land charges pages.

You will be able to search for a property address using all or part of the address or the postcode. There can be up to five different plotting sheets relating to a single address/site (dependant on the amount of development activity in the area) you can select which layer you wish to view from the list on the top right hand side of the window.

Some of the information held on the maps is out of date so you should not use the documents to confirm information such as a properties listed status or whether permitted development has been removed, The correct information is held on our interactive map.

 A number of different registers are shown on the system if the number is prefixed by;

  • A square then it will be a planning application,
  • A triangle is used when the number refers to an advertisement. If you search for these numbers then prefix them with AD/ in the Coventry Reference search field.
  • An oval is used for enforcement notices which can also be also prefixed by an E You can at the Enforcement Register to access details of the notice.
  • Numbers prefixed by a B do not form part of the planning register as they are pre 1948 if you are interested in researching site histories prior to 1948 then you should contact the History Centre who hold Coventry's archive information.
