School resources

This page is to offer educational providers some useful links and resources to aid educational lessons around Prevent and Prevent-related subjects with students in primary, secondary and post-16 studies. This is just a small sample of products available and it's advised that teachers review all materials thoroughly before delivery to ensure local delivery is suitable.

Many of the links provided are third party and are therefore not endorsed by the council, however they offer useful tips and guidance to aid teachers and education providers on safe, appropriate delivery.

Please note, it's recommended all teachers/front-line staff delivering these products and related subjects should be aware of the Prevent agenda.

Prevent Duty: Act Early Stories (LGfL/Counter Terrorism Policing) 

LGfL and Counter Terrorism Policing have developed a new educational resource, 'Act Early Stories'. The toolkit is aimed at DSLs, PSHE/RSHE leads and youth leaders in secondary schools and out of school settings. 

The activities and lessons aim to raise awareness of exploitation, spark discussion with young people around extremist narratives and promote critical thinking. This new resource hopes to help build staff confidence to promote dialogue to address this difficult subject with young people.

Based on real-life stories around radicalisation, the resource includes videos, ready to use session slides with activities and guidance notes so they can be used by experienced practitioners as well as those who may not have much knowledge of the issues raised. 

BBC teaching resources

This collection of classroom resources can be used to support secondary teaching around digital literacy and fake news.

The BBC Fake News resources might be used as part of Safer Internet Day, to help educate pupils on using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

Going Too Far – Extremism and the Law

We have launched a new resource called Going Too Far. 

This is an interactive classroom resource designed for teachers to help students understand extremism and how certain online behaviour may be illegal or dangerous - aimed at young people, with elements easily adaptable for primaries/transition. All activities have cross-curricular relevance, facilitate a whole-school approach in line with RSHE guidance, Keeping Children Safe in Education, and link to statements in the UKCIS Education for a Connected World framework.

The pandemic and recent events have resulted in an abundance of extremist content online. Going Too Far aims to promote critical thinking and build resilience using recent case studies with discussion stimuli so young people can:

• explore the techniques used by extremists and evaluate digital content, to help make positive choices about who/what is trustworthy online
• challenge extremist narratives
• consider the consequences of their actions and take a positive stand.

The resource includes:

• Starter videos featuring subject experts
• Scenario-based activities to explore potential risks, whether gaming, or on social media
• Getting Help area, signposting to trusted sources for support and reporting channels
• Teacher mode tab with access to printable notes, extension activities, mini video guides and suggested answers to help lead informative discussions
• SEND & Inclusion area with video/audio narration, alternative text versions and differentiated questions to help teachers support as wide a range of learners as possible.

The resource can be accessed directly from the Going Too Far website or through the Educate Against Hate website.
