Please read all the information before applying

Important dates

The application process to apply on time starts on 1 September 2024.

The National closing date for making your application on time is 15 January 2025.

16 April 2025 – result emailed by 5pm or details available in your online account.

18 April 2025 - Parents who submitted a paper application will receive the result by letter.

Late applications received after 15 January 2025 will be considered in the second allocation round in May 2025.

Please Access the Coventry Education Services Portal [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/schoolplaces] to make your On time application before 15 January 2025.

We recommend parents to apply online as:

  • it is quick, easy to use and secure
  • you receive an email confirmation once you submit your application
  • there is no risk of your application getting lost in the post
  • you can check and change your application up to the closing date. However, please make sure that you resubmit if you view or change it
  • it saves time, paper and postage
  • you will receive an email on the 16 April 2025 confirming the school allocated
  • you can log into your account on 16 April 2025 to find out the result

If you do not have the internet at home please check with your child’s nursery or with libraries and schools for support in completing your online application. Please use #CovConnects [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/covconnects] to find more information about access to free digital support in your area.

If you are unable to make an online application, contact your local primary school for a paper application form or email primaryadmissions@coventry.gov.uk. [mailto:primaryadmissions@coventry.gov.uk]

Things to think about when making your application

We strongly recommend you include three choices of schools on your application; one being your catchment area school. There is no advantage in listing fewer than three schools or including the same school more than once; in fact, by not including 3 realistic choices, it could result in your child being allocated a school some distance away.

Increase your chances of getting the school you want

A copy of the primary school admissions booklet is on our website at Primary and Secondary school admissions booklets [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/downloads/download/243/in-year-primarysecondary-school-admissions-booklets]. Please consider each school’s specific admissions arrangements carefully when making your application.

  • Look at the oversubscription criteria in the policy to work out which priority would be given to your application.
  • Check how places have been allocated in the last 2 years
  • Check your distance from the school. The Admissions team can confirm this for you, please email: primaryadmissions@coventry.gov.uk [mailto:secondaryadmissions@coventry.gov.uk] stating ‘distance query’ in the subject box.
  • Compare your priority and distance with how places have been offered in previous years to get an indication of how successful your application might be.

Applying for a Faith School

You will need to complete the supplementary form [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/downloads/download/244/primary_admission_forms_september_2011] if you are applying for a place at faith schools: Seva, or Leigh Church of England schools (including when applying online).

If you have included a Catholic Primary School as a preference; you must indicate on your application whether your child is a Baptised Catholic. You must also forward a copy of your child’s certificate to each of the Catholic Schools you have requested by the 15 January 2025. Failure to do so could result in your child not being considered under the appropriate admissions criteria

Multiple applications (twins/triplets)

If you need to apply for more than one child you should complete and submit separate applications for each child.

Key facts about the application process

  • The application process starts from September 2024.
  • You must make your application before the closing date of 15 January 2025.
  • Coventry residents can apply for schools in other Local Authorities e.g. Warwickshire or Solihull, you only have to complete a Coventry application form and indicate the school you want on this form.
  • Parents must apply for a school place through their Local Authority (the city where you live/pay council tax too).
  • Even if you already have an older child at the school you must apply for your younger child.
  • If your child attends a school nursery you still need to ensure you submit an application before the closing date. Attendance at the Nursery does not give you any higher priority for admission.
  • If your child is currently in a separate infant school, you will need to apply for a place at a junior school for Year 3.
  • You should list three schools in order of preference. There is no advantage in listing fewer than three schools or including the same school more than once; in fact, by not including three realistic preferences, it could result in your child being allocated a school some distance away.
  • If you live within a school catchment area you have more chance of your child being offered a place at that school. However, living within the catchment area does not guarantee a place at that school as there may be more applicants than available places to allocate. Information regarding the catchment area for your address [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/catchmentareas].

Please remember to include your child’s full name, and date of birth, if you write to us or if you submit information to support an online application. You will need to remember your login details on offer day. Make a careful note of them, noting exactly how you entered them. e.g. if you used capital or lower case letters.

A copy of the primary school admissions booklet [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/downloads/download/243/in-year-primarysecondary-school-admissions-booklets] is on our website. Many of the schools have specific admission arrangements and it is important that you consider these carefully when making your application. The booklet also has links to each primary school website

Please note:

  • For September 2025 a number of schools have consulted and agreed on changes to their admissions criteria. Therefore, please look at the admissions policy for each school.

Applying for a Faith School

You will need to complete the supplementary form [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/downloads/download/5231/2022-and-2023---secondary-supplementary-forms] if you are applying for a place under the faith criteria for the following schools

  • Blue Coat Church of England School
  • Seva School

In addition, if you are applying for Eden Girls School under exceptional medical/social grounds, you should provide supporting evidence directly to the school.

Please ensure that you return your completed supplementary form/supporting evidence to the school direct before 31 October 2024.

If you have included a Catholic School as a preference; you must indicate on your application whether your child is a Baptised Catholic. You must also forward a copy of your child’s certificate to each of the Catholic Schools you have requested by the 31 October 2024. • If you are a Coventry resident but want to apply for schools in other Local Authorities e.g. Warwickshire or Solihull, you only have to complete a Coventry application form and indicate the school you want on this form.
  • Coventry City does not have any Grammar schools in its area. To apply for a Grammar school, you will need to include the school within your Coventry application in order for them to be considered. However, you must ensure that you have already registered to sit the 11+ test with the Local Authority in which the Grammar school is situated as the deadline date to register is usually at the end of June the year before your child starts secondary school. Coventry School Admissions do not administer the 11+ test.

Making a realistic application - Before you apply

Comparing your priority and distance with how places have been offered in previous years will give you an indication of how successful your application might be. There are further details on how places were allocated for each individual school in the Secondary Admissions 2025 booklet [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/downloads/download/243/in-year-primarysecondary-school-admissions-booklets].

Making a realistic application example

This is an example and does not imply the outcome of an application.

Imagine you are applying for School A - find out your priority by checking your circumstances against the oversubscription criteria like this:

Priority by circumstances against the oversubscription criteria example
Priority Circumstances Response

1 Children who, at the time of admission, are in the care of a local authority or are provided with accommodation by the authority (looked after children) and all previously looked after children who were looked after but ceased to be so because they were adopted, or became subject to a child arrangements order or a special guardianship order. Including those children who appear (to the admission authority) to have been in state care outside England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted.

Is your child or has your child ever been in foster care or adopted after being in foster care with a local authority or state care outside England?

No

2 Children who live in the catchment area served by the school, who have a brother or sister attending the school provided that the brother or sister will continue to attend that school the following year

  • You can check this using https://www.coventry.gov.uk/catchmentareas [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/catchmentareas]
  • Do you have an older child attending in year 7-10 at the time of applying and will they still be attending this school next September?

No

3 Children living in the catchment area for School A

No

4 Children living outside the catchment area with a brother or sister who currently attends the school, provided that the brother or sister will continue to attend that school the following year

Do you have an older child attending in year 7-10 at the time of applying and will they still be attending this school next September?

No

5 Children of staff employed by the school for more than 2 years (this does not apply to all schools)

Are you a member of school staff at School A?

No

6 Children living outside the catchment area

How far do you live from School A?

1.6 miles

For School A your application has priority 6 and you live 1.6 miles from the school. Check in Section 2 the school page and compare to the last person offered a place at School A for last September, this could have been a child in priority 6 at 1.194 miles from the school.

This then means that your child would not have been offered a place because you live too far away. However, this is only a guide and does not mean your application would be unsuccessful every year.

The number of places available in priority 6 will change depending on how many applications are made for each school and how many children live in the catchment area. There is no guarantee that a similar situation will occur for admission in September 2025. A high birth year is predicted for Year 7 September 2025 entry.

The distance of the last person offered a place could also change, for example, it will not always be 1.194 miles for School A. You can still apply for this school and if it is the school you want the most you should put it first on your application, but you should include other schools where you may have a better chance of being offered a place.

You should find out your priority and distance for all of your preferences. If you have a higher priority or the same priority and live closer to the school you have a good chance of being offered a place. If you have the same priority and live further away your chance of being offered a place is not as good.

Many people will choose to make applications for schools that have been judged by Ofsted as outstanding schools. This means that the schools will be very popular and have far more applications than places. For these schools they are often/usually unable to make offers to children who are lower than priority 3 or 4 in their policies. If you only apply for schools like this, where your application would be classed as under priority 6 then you will not be offered a place at any of your preferred schools.

Please note: The local authority legally must make sure that your child is offered a school place, this means that you will be given a place at the nearest school with a space available. This may not be your catchment area school, especially if all places are allocated to applicants who asked for the school and if other local schools have more applicants than they have places, you run the risk of being allocated a school some distance away.

To prevent this from happening we would ask you to always include a school where your application will have a higher priority, even if you put this as your third preference. For example, apply for your catchment area school (as you may not get this later on), or a school where you have a higher priority because of your faith, or you have an older child already attending that school. Some schools do consider 6th form pupils as siblings (check the school policies for details)

If the school you want to apply for is a Catholic school, they will give priority to children who are baptised Catholic and/or those who live in the parish. Coventry Catholic schools require you to send the baptismal certificate for your child as well as include the school name on your application. Blue Coat School and Seva School require a supplementary form [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/downloads/download/5231/2022-and-2023---secondary-supplementary-forms] to be completed and returned to the school by the deadline date as additional documentation.

Coventry application forms have three choices for you to complete, If your three choices of schools are all outside Coventry, we would strongly advise that at least one of these choices should be your catchment area school - this will give you a higher chance of receiving a suitable school place offer on 3 March 2025.

There will be a high number of children applying for places in 2025 so there will be more competition for places.

Please note: All schools outside of Coventry will give you the final criteria of the distance you live from the school, unless you have a sibling already attending the school. Please make sure that you check the admission policies of the schools outside of Coventry by visiting their individual school website or contacting the Local Authority in which the school resides.

Remember:

  • If we can allocate a place at more than one of your preferred schools, we will offer you the school you ranked the highest.
  • You must include your catchment area school if you want to apply for a place at that school as there is no guarantee you will get this later in the process.

Secondary school offers 2025 - additional information

If you are looking to submit an online application for your child’s secondary school place for 2025 entry. You will be aware that secondary school places will be offered on Monday 3 March 2025.

This update is to provide you with some useful information about the process and point you to additional support that will be available online.

If you apply online, you will be sent an email informing you which secondary school has been offered to your child.  Emails will be sent on Monday 3 March 2025, and we expect that you will receive your email by 4pm.

The exact time will depend on your email service provider. If you have not received any emails, please ensure you check your junk mail folder as the email could be in there. Your junk folder could be called 'junk', 'trash' or 'spam'.

Alternatively, you can log back into your account to see the result of your application from 3 March 2025.

All parents who make a paper or telephone application will be sent a decision letter via post.  All letters leave the office on the 3 March 2025.  They are posted Second Class so they should arrive (depending on Royal Mail) on Wednesday 5 March 2025.

Please do not contact Coventry City Council before you have received the offer of a school place.

If for any reason you have not received your letter or email by 5 March 2025, we will provide you with information on the outcome of your application over the telephone.

If you apply after the closing date of 31 October 2024 then you will not receive an offer of a school place on 3 March 2025. You will be notified in early April 2025 of your school place offer.

If you did not make an application, then please apply as soon as possible. [http://www.coventry.gov.uk/school-admissions/school-admissions-online-applications/2]

Next steps (after 31 October 2024)

If your circumstances change and you want to make changes to your application to either change your address or request different schools, then please email your request to 11plus@coventry.gov.uk [mailto:11plus@coventry.gov.uk] or call 024 76975445.

Address changes can be accepted and changed on an application form (as long as Proof of Address is supplied and you are living in the address) up to 31 December 2024, any other address changes and requests for schools need to be received by 17 March 2025 in order to be considered for the second round of allocations in April 2025.

If your child has not been offered a place at any of the schools you applied for, this will be because the school(s) received more applications than there were places available and other children met the admission criteria more closely than your child. The Local Authority is legally obliged to offer a school place and therefore your child will have been offered a place at the nearest school from the home address that had a place available after we had completed the allocation. If you are not happy with the distance of the school to your home address you may be entitled to a free travel pass for your child [http://www.coventry.gov.uk/schools-schooling/school-travel-passes]. The school place offered (preference 8) will not be removed from your child until a place can be offered at an alternative school.

After the initial allocation on 3 March 2025, your child will be placed on the waiting lists for the schools where your application has been refused and you will have the right of appeal. In the meantime, you can make requests for places at other schools. Please email your request to 11plus@coventry.gov.uk [mailto:11plus@coventry.gov.uk] or call 024 76975445 by 17 March 2025 with any new requests.

From 18 March 2025 we will put together all late applications and changes of preference and complete a second round of offers in April 2025. Any places which become available will be offered according to those who have the highest priority on the school waiting lists which are organised according to the admissions policy of each school.

Waiting lists

If you do not receive an offer of a place at one of your higher preference schools your child's name will automatically be placed on the waiting lists for those schools and will remain on these lists until the end of the Autumn term (31 December). Applications are prioritised according to the admissions policy of each school.

Having a place on the waiting list is no guarantee that a place will become available.

The position your child is at on the waiting list is as at the day you enquire. There will be no changes to the waiting list from 3 March until we have completed the second allocation round so information on changes to waiting list positions will only be available from 7 April 2025.

The Admissions team will contact you if a school place becomes available for your child from a waiting list.

Parents who have applied for places outside the city should contact the appropriate authority direct to discuss the appeals process and the position on any waiting lists.

Appeals

You have the right to appeal at any school that you have applied for and had written confirmation of being refused admission.

If you are considering the possibility of submitting an appeal, please read the advice regarding appeals on the School Admissions website carefully.

You can only appeal against the refusal of a place at a school you applied for.

Appeals are heard and decided by panels that are completely independent of the council and the school(s).

Consider the likelihood of your appeal being successful.

For example, were you realistic with the preferences you submitted for your child?

Appeals are generally only successful if you or your child have exceptional reasons for needing admission to a particular school.

There are no guarantees that any appeal will be successful.

Please find below a list of schools whose appeals are administered by the Local Authority. Should you wish to appeal for any of these schools, the closing date for submitting your written appeal is 17 April 2025 with a second round closing date of 6 June 2025.

If you submit an appeal after this date, it will be classed as a late appeal and will be heard after the on-time appeals, and it may not be heard before the beginning of September 2025.

All other Coventry Secondary school appeals are administered by the schools themselves, further information on deadline dates and who to contact can be found on the individual schools website.

Primary school offers 2025 - additional information

If you submit an online application for your child’s primary school place. You will be advised that primary school places will be offered on Wednesday 16 April 2025.

This update is to provide you with some useful information about the process and point you to additional support that will be available online.

If you apply On Time and Online, you will be sent an email informing you which school has been offered to your child.  Emails will be sent on Wednesday 16 April 2025, and we expect that you will receive your email by 4pm.

The exact time will depend on your email service provider. If you have not received any emails, please ensure you check your junk mail folder as the email could be in there. Your junk folder could be called 'junk', 'trash' or 'spam'.

Alternatively, you can log back into your account to see the result of your application.

All parents who make a paper or telephone application will be sent a decision letter via email or second-class post by Friday 18 April 2025.

Please do not contact Coventry City Council before you have received the offer of a school place.

If for any reason you have not received your letter or email by the 18 April 2025, we will provide you with information on the outcome of your application over the telephone.

If you apply after the closing date of 15 January 2025 then you will not receive an offer of a school place on 16 April 2025. You will be notified by the end of May of your school place offer.

If you have not made an application by 15 January 2025, then please apply as soon as possible. [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/school-admissions/school-admissions-online-applications]

Next steps

If your circumstances change  after 16 April 2025 and you want to change your application to request different schools, then please email your request to Rising5@coventry.gov.uk [mailto:Rising5@coventry.gov.uk]  or call 024 7697 5445 by 30 April 2025 with any new requests.

You will be placed on the waiting lists for the schools where your application has been refused and you will have the right of appeal. In the meantime, you can make requests for places at other schools.  Please email your request to Rising5@coventry.gov.uk [mailto:Rising5@coventry.gov.uk]  or call 024 76975445 by 30 April 2025 with any new requests

From 1 May 2025 we will put together all late applications and changes of preference and complete a second round of offers by the end of the month.

The position your child is at on the waiting list is as of the day you enquire. There will be no changes to the waiting list from 16 April 2025 until we have completed the second allocation round so information on changes to waiting list positions will only be available from 3 June 2025.

Infant Class Size appeals are subject to the Government legislation around class sizes of no more than 30 pupils per class. Read more information [http://www.coventry.gov.uk/info/148/school_admissions/122/school_appeals/6]

There are no guarantees that any appeal will be successful.

Please find below a list of schools whose appeals are administered by the Local Authority. Should you wish to appeal for any of these schools, the closing date for submitting your written appeal is 23 May 2025 with a second-round closing date of 6 June 2024.

If you submit an appeal after 6 June 2025, it will be classed as a late appeal and will be heard after the on-time appeals, and it may not be heard before the beginning of September 2025.
