Digital functional skills qualification
The general purpose of Digital Functional Skills is to enable adults to develop the digital skills they need for life, work, or further study. They are appropriate qualifications for adults and young people with no or low digital skills wishing to confirm they have digital skills needed for employment or further study.
Course costs
Digital Functional Skills courses are free, as long as you meet the grant eligibility criteria.
Course location
Digital Functional Skill classes run at a number of locations across the city.
Course times
We run classes during the school term times.
Digital Functional Skills classes will run in the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms.
Classes are normally one session per week, and we have them on various days in the week.
- Morning classes are from 9:30 until 12:00
- Afternoon classes are from 12.30pm until 3pm
- Evening classes are from 6.00pm until 8.30pm
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, but we would strongly encourage that you complete our Introduction to Digital Functional Skills course first.
We would expect your reading level to reflect the level of qualification that you are applying for.
There is an expectation that you would have access to a laptop and reliable Wi-Fi.
We expect to you complete one to two hours a week of home study
Course content
Entry Level 3 Qualification
This qualification provides a solid foundation in Information Technology, essential for early-stage employment or training roles that require IT skills. By completing this course, you will acquire the knowledge and the skills necessary to improve your confidence and to prepare you for more advanced tasks in your professional or learning journey.
Level 1 Qualification
This qualification is aimed at adults with some experience of using Digital Devices and the Internet who wish to strengthen their Information Technology skills; it also provides an opportunity for learners to utilise Information Technology to support progression in a range of vocational sectors

Before you can enrol, we need to check whether you are working at Entry 3 or Level 1, or if you need to do the Introductory Course first. Please book a place on an enrolment session so we can complete an initial assessment for you.

ID needed to enrol
You will need to prove your identity and that you meet the grant eligibility criteria. To do this we need to see some ID
- If you were born in the UK please bring your birth certificate, driving licence or passport.
- If you are an EU citizen please bring your passport/ID card and a share code generated within the last 90 days.
- Otherwise, please bring your resident's permit, passport with visa or whatever documentation you have that shows your resident status.
We will also need your National Insurance Number.
