Find out how to use your Mobility Credits to pay for transport services
How can I use my Mobility Credits?
- Mobility Credits will be available for you to use them within a two-year period
- The credits are redeemed and issued on a Swift Card - Swift is a smart card ticketing system operated by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM). It enables residents to pay for travel across the West Midlands in a flexible, cashless way. More information about Swift cards [https://www.tfwm.org.uk/who-we-are/what-we-do/swift-and-ticketing-schemes/] is available on TfWM’s website
- You can also exchange some, or all, of your Mobility Credits for cycle vouchers, which can be used to buy bikes, e-bikes and relevant accessories, such a helmets, lights and locks. If you want to take up this option, you will need to speak to one our team who will be able to arrange this. You can contact us about this by emailing the team on mobilitycredits@coventry.gov.uk [mailto:mobilitycredits@coventry.gov.uk].
Can I pay for the travel of other members of my household?
You can use your credits to pay for your own travel and the travel of others in your household (people who live with you), within the West Midlands area.
What transport services can I pay for with my Mobility Credits?
Currently you can spend Mobility Credits on bus (within the West Midlands) and West Midlands Metro, train (to destinations in the West Midlands) the WM Cycle Hire scheme and, by trading your credits for cycle vouchers, the purchase of new bicycles or bicycle accessories.
The Council and TfWM are working on further improvements to this scheme, which will allow residents to spend their credits on a wider range of travel options in the future. It is expected that this will include the West Midlands on Demand bus service [https://www.tfwm.org.uk/plan-your-journey/ways-to-travel/buses-in-the-west-midlands/on-demand-buses-in-the-west-midlands/] (a new kind of bus service without a timetable or a fixed route) and ‘car clubs’ (shared cars that can hired when needed by anyone in the community)
How can I spend my Mobility Credits?

To use trains
To use your Mobility Credits to travel by train you need to use your Swift Card to buy a ticket from either a railway station ticket office or ticket machine, prior to boarding train.

Mobility Credits
Why we are providing Mobility Credits
Mobility Credits aim to provide a range of alternative transport options to residents, helping to make new developments more sustainable. They act as an incentive, encouraging people to travel by public transport, walking and cycling and to reduce their car use – thereby reducing congestion, improving air quality and helping to tackle climate change.
Why is this important?
Mobility Credits are one part of a wider Council strategy to change the way people travel to, from and around Coventry.
The Coventry Transport Strategy [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/transport-strategy-2], which was approved in 2022, sets out these plans in more detail. As well as introducing incentives, like Mobility Credits, to encourage residents to change their travel habits, these plans also include making major improvements to the city’s public transport network and creating a more suitable environment for walking and cycling. The changes are important because current levels of car travel – currently the dominant mode of travel in the city – will not be sustainable in the future.
The Strategy therefore aims to reduce this and to prioritise more sustainable modes of transport. This change is intended to help address a number of challenges including, for example:
- tackling climate change
- improving the health of local people, by reducing air pollution associated with congestion and encouraging higher levels of ‘active travel’
- preventing road traffic accidents
- supporting the city’s economy, and
- meeting the additional travel demand from new homes, in a way that does not lead to increased congestion and air pollution.
Who pays for Mobility Credits?
Mobility Credits are provided at no cost to the households receiving them.
They are funded by developers, as a condition of their planning permission. For this reason, only residents moving into new built homes in specific parts of the city are eligible to receive them.
While the value of the credits will vary between developments, it is generally likely to be between £400 and £1,200 per household.
