16 October update
The Traffic Regulation Orders have now been approved for the 20mph zoned areas, including all signage. These are required before the speed limit changes go live.
14 October update
Bollards to be installed in Arden Street and a resident key holder will be designated including a key to be held by the City Council regarding events. The bollards stop traffic speeding through the street, which in theory will mean the street will be a cul-de-sac. Permanent advance warning signs will be installed ahead of bollards going in.
This means the following roads will be permanently closed:
- Arden Street directly outside number 75 at the junction of Clarendon Street.
- The Shaftesbury Avenue to Beechwood Avenue junction.
1 October update
Following the build-out work and bollards work to slow traffic on Beechwood Avenue to slow traffic hatched markings will be added to the parking area on Beechwood.
Traffic signals will be on Albany Road week commencing 7 October for crossing works. Tactiles will also be installed either of the toucan crossing.
The newly installed Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDs) on Hartington Crescent will be planted up with plants that will be hardy and attractive all year round. This will assist with slowing rainwater run-off by directing it into an enriched soil bed, and some will slowly drain into the main drainage system to help slow the flow into our rivers.
Late September and early October update
20mph zone signage and road marking have begun being installed across the liveable neighbourhood. There will be approximately 200 of these in about 40 locations.
27 September update
Lining work on Earlsdon Avenue South has been redone where the pavement on the street from outside number 73 to outside Elsie Jones House near the City Arms pub.
20 September update
Rochester Road is complete apart from the bollards that are on order to be installed shortly. Stoneleigh Avenue works have also been completed this week.
6 September update
Work will be done to build out the curb in the road with bollards and 'Give Way' priority to transfer from Rochester Road to Beechwood Avenue to slow traffic. Four-way lights will be in place by the bus shelter and outside the nursery. Work will last approximately three weeks.
2 September update
Work to install the toucan crossing on Albany Road and the extension of the existing cycleway will recommence after being temporarily paused due to underground utilities needing follow-up investigations. Four-way traffic lights will be in place and the work is expected to take three weeks from 30 Sept meaning the road will have barriers with a gap for pedestrians. The toucan crossing works are due to take place in early October.
Spencer Park entrance back open and build out for toucan crossing commenced with three-way lights. Work in both locations will run consecutively.
Work outside Earlsdon Library, the primary school, and City Arms pub will be completed by the end of this week. The central reservation has been widened and the SuDs area is now complete and ready for planting.
A new bus shelter has now been installed on Earlsdon High Street, along with new belisha beacons - an orange ball containing a flashing light, mounted on a striped post on the pavement at each end of the zebra crossing – have also been installed and in working order.
12 August update
Work will begin on Earlsdon Avenue South for a two-week period. There will be work to widen the pavement on the street from outside number 73 to outside Elsie Jones House. These improvements will also allow easier access to buses, in the meantime there will be a temporary bus stop. Two way traffic lights will be in place.
29 July update
Work to widen the pavement on Earlsdon Avenue North from Earsdon Primary School down to the island to make the area safer for pedestrians and school children. A Sustainable Urban Drainage (SuDs) will also be installed with bollards. The pavement being resurfaced from the tactile paving outside the library around Albany Road. This work will be carried out within the six-week school holidays to cause minimal disruption. No traffic signals are being used. The central pedestrian crossing area will be fenced off and pedestrians will be guided away from this crossing using signage around the island
15 July update
Work to widen the pavement on the corner of Moor Street onto Earlsdon Street will begin to accommodate room for bike racks. This means there will be a four-week closure on one side down towards the island and a diversion route will be in place. This will take traffic down Earlsdon Avenue South, along Kenilworth Road, and back up Beechwood Avenue. The purpose of this work is to increase space on the pavement for pedestrians and improve visibility. A new zebra crossing will also be installed towards the island. Access for businesses and affected frontages will remain.
The works will also include resurfacing work outside the City Arms pub up to the bus shelter. A new bus stop has been ordered and will be in place as soon as it becomes available. Slabs have been replaced with a tarmac finish due to the pavement degrading.
11 July update
There will be a permanent closure in place ahead of work starting on Stoneleigh Avenue where it meets with Kenilworth Road. Advance warning signs to be in place from 4 July 2024. Temporary diversion signs will be in place until the works are complete when they will be removed on 19 July 2024. Lit 'No Entry' signs will also be installed.
26 June update
There will be a full one-day closure with diversions in place on Belvedere Road at the junction of Broadway to install a raised table to slow traffic and improve the pedestrian crossing route into the park.
24 June update
28 May update
Construction has now started.
Beechwood Avenue will be closed for three weeks from 4 June, between Bates Road and Styvechale Avenue. This is to enable us to construct the traffic calming at the Tennis Club entrance, improve the guardrailing at the bend between the Tennis Club and the Golf Club, and to construct the new pedestrian island at the Golf Club. Diversions will be in place, and access for residents and affected frontages will remain.
Please note that sometimes a permit might be requested for longer than the work will take to allow for unforeseen weather and ground conditions.
See below for previous construction updates.
May 2024 update
Construction starting soon
We have finished the statutory consultation on the Earlsdon Liveable Neighbourhood scheme, the third round of public engagement on the project since we first went out to the local community in December 2022. This means we are now ready to start work to implement the improvements.
Find out more about the final proposals and the consultation that took place.
We will be starting construction on Tuesday 28 May and you may have already seen some activity while we have been getting ready to start.
The work will be phased so that we can minimise disruption. Work around the schools will take place during holidays, and where possible we will avoid working during major events. This includes Motofest on 1 and 2 June when we will make sure any traffic management for Earlsdon Liveable Neighbourhood is removed during the festival.
Phase one of the work will include:
- Toucan crossing on Albany Road and extension of the existing cycleway - a Toucan crossing under the railway bridge on Albany Road opposite Spencer Park. This work is expected to take approximately two months and will need some two-way and four-way traffic lights at times
- Traffic calming features on Beechwood Avenue at the tennis club, improvements to the guard railing at the bend between the tennis club and golf club, and a new pedestrian island at the golf club
- Raised table at the junction of Broadway and Belvedere Road to slow traffic and improve the pedestrian crossing route into the park.
If you have any questions about the works, please email the project team or phone 024 7697 6544.
Further updates on phasing will be provided on this page.
