Background

  1. The draft Climate Change Strategy was launched on February 15th, 2023, it sets out the foundations for creating a sustainable zero carbon city. The strategy supports the delivery of the City’s One Coventry Plan, which includes tackling the causes and consequences of climate change as one of its three key priorities.
  2. The strategy aims to protect the most vulnerable, mitigate the impact of climate change and will help build resilience across the city, while also maximising the economic benefits of the green industrial revolution through new employment opportunities.
  3. The draft Climate Change Strategy has been developed based on the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives’ five pathways to creating systemic change for a sustainable future:

    Five climate change pathways

  4. Note that following consultation feedback the Equitable and People Centred Pathway has been renamed ‘Fairer Green Futures’ which is a simplified title that represents a fair and just transition for creating inclusive urban communities and addressing poverty.
  5. The consultation sought to understand the views of the people of Coventry on the pathways and key themes within them, to identify which issues are most important to people to help influence the final version of the Strategy and accompanying Climate Change Action Plan.
  6. The Council has collected over 500 responses and 1855 comments in relation to the draft Climate Change Strategy which is set out in the outline of the consultation process below. This report provides an executive summary of feedback received, highlighting key themes, issues and comments. This is supported by a number of more detailed reports which will be used to feed into the update of the Strategy.
